Signs and Symptoms of Diabetes
There are two different types of diabetes. They
are known as Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Before we look at
the two different types we will take a look at the common
signs of diabetes. Any one of the following could be a
sign of diabetes:
-Unusual tiredness
-Excessive hunger and/or thirst
-Blurred vision
-Needing to urinate more than usual
-Sudden and/or unexplained weight loss
If you suspect you have a sign or signs of diabetes, please
check with your doctor. A simple blood glucose test will tell
you if you need to go for further
investigations.
Type One Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes used to be
known as juvenile diabetes and is most commonly diagnosed in
children and young adults.
In Type 1 diabetes the body produces no insulin and is
therefore unable to use sugar. Insulin takes the sugar in the
blood to the cells and provides them with the necessary
fuel.
Signs of diabetes in type 1 patients tend to develop much more
quickly than Type 2 and the symptoms are often much more
severe.
Type Two Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes develops over
a longer period of time and problems are not always recognised
as a sign of diabetes. Some people do not notice any symptoms
at all and are only diagnosed during routine check ups with
their doctor.
If you have any concerns whatsoever that you may have symptoms
of diabetes, check with your healthcare professional as soon as
possible. Early treatment can help to prevent serious
complications and health problems later on.
