Welcome to Gary's Diabetic Recipes site
On this site we aim to offer advice to both newly diagnosed diabetics and people who have lived
with the condition for some time. A diabetic menu does have some restrictions but needn't be dull and boring.
A good diabetic menu is a healthy diet for all the family. You will still be able to enjoy a wide range of foods
and eat a well balanced diet. You will simply need to choose your menu wisely and develop sensible eating
habits.
Your diabetic diet menu should be used in conjunction with a good exercise program. The more you are able to
control your weight, both through diet and exercise, the better you will be able to control your diabetes.
Keeping your weight under
control also helps to lower the risk of strokes,
heart disease and high blood
pressure.
As well as information on diabetic diets, diabetic menus and diabetic recipes you will also
find lots of general information on diabetes.
A good balanced diabetic menu plan consists of foods low in sugar, fat and salt – the same kind of diet
recommended for non-diabetics.
The diabetic menu should consist of foods from the following groups:
Approximately one third of your nutrition should come from fruit and vegetables, one third from cereals, breads
and potatoes and one third from meat, fish and dairy products or, in the case of vegetarians, suitable
alternatives to animal products. Foods containing fats and sugar should be kept to a minimum.
The information on this site will help you with your diabetic menu and your meal plans. If you have and special
needs or considerations, you should be able to get good advice from your GP or your dietician. If you have not
seen a dietician ask your GP for a referral.
